Day 5. Ferndale, WA to Deception Point State Park

A nice 53 mile day, in the 70's and still smoke hazy for the most part ending up at our campsite at Deception Point State Park around 4:30.

About an hour into the day at 10am we were touring through Bellingham, a very nice and Bohemian looking small city off of  the bay.

The middle miles of the day had us doing a lot of climbing through dark green forrests and the coastal mountains along the coast.

Nice views west including an anchored tanker off of Chuckanut Mountain and park.

After an unhealthy day of eating (hamburgers, fries and pizza) yesterday we committed to trying harder to eat well. Angela scores an excellent grilled albacore tuna melt and side salad. I went all in with a Cobb salad!  I could feel my system purging!

The little cafe we had lunch at in Edison also was serving lunch to walk up students from the school less than a block away. The kids seemed middle school aged at best. Seemed a bit young to me. Maybe it gives them a chance to catch a smoke too!?

We've been on highway WA 20 since we approached Anacortes, WA and it was not good. Lots of heavy traffic and when we started climbing west on the peninsula the breakdown lane all but disappeared.  It wasn't pleasant at all. We stopped to catch our breath and take in the views of the Deception Point Bridge. The state park where we'll camp for the night is not far across the bridge.

We pushed our bikes across the narrow Deception Bridge for safety and to allow time to take in the spectacular view.

The sun setting through the haze.,,.

And the swirling sea currents and the rocky bluffs framing the inlet.

Now it's time to relax at our campsite before sunset and cook up some dehydrated chicken and dumplings for two on our JetBoil backpacking stove.  I'm affraid our site looked a bit like a yard sale at this point.  The forecast calls for only a slight chance of rain so we're leaving the rain fly off for fresh air but it won't be far away if we need to throw it over the tent in the event it does rain on us. Ah, we live so dangerously!!😬

We walked to the ocean to see the sunset but the clouds had moved in and obscured it from us. They call this body of water the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  To the west of the strait is Victoria Island, Canada and just to the southwest is Olympia National Park where we'll be heading towards tomorrow.

A last parting photo of the WA 20 crossing over the Deception Point Bridge.  Time to walk back to camp, secure our food items from the bears and packs of raccoons and crawl into our sleeping bags to rest up for a new day tomorrow.
