The Ride So Far

Phase I Route

Arriving in Astoria marked the first of 5 Adventure Cycling route maps for the Pacific Coast Route. After 8 days we've covered 420 miles from Vancouver, BC to Astoria averaging 52.5 miles per day. Considering we really didn't do any serious training we're quite happy with Phase I of the trip.

Looking ahead we have about 1,600 miles more to get to San Diego.  On the positive side we're getting stronger and our butts are getting tougher!  We're also expecting more favorable winds from the north along the coast which will help us with our average speeds.  But the seasons here are finally starting to shift to Autumn from a hot and dry Summer. People have been talking about a significant shift in the weather pattern and a large rain storm is projected for this Sunday/Monday.

So, having said all that, I expect we can continue to enjoy ourselves, not become slaves to daily mileage, and finish our trip including a jaunt into Tijuana for a beer and taco before October 18. We've been trying to focus on just the day ahead of us but in the back of our minds we know our grandson Graham will celebrate his 3rd birthday on October 21st and we'd really like to be there for that!

Graham and his younger brother Miles on a recent trip to the grocery. We miss them both very much.
