A nice day today, decent mileage of 57 miles and an early finish at 3:30 after starting around 8:15. More sunny skies, and warm temperatures as we head south towards Oregon.
Good bye Centralia, on our way out of town.
We had several nice views of Mt. Saint Helens today to our east. In 1980 it blew the mountain top off in one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history for the US. The visitors center is about 5 miles to the east of our route today so hoping we can make a side trip to get a better view.
One picture, one thousand words, you pick 'em.
We continue to follow rivers through the broad valleys of southern Washington, in this case the Cowlitz River in Toledo, Washington.
We had good roads and light traffic for most of the day with a handful of steep climbs but nothing Angela couldn't handle!!
Since we left Vancouver seven days or 360 miles ago, we've been paralleling Interstate 5 or it's Canadian equivalent. Tomorrow we'll cross it for the last time as we make a big turn to the west along the mighty Columbia River and follow it to the Pacific Coast in Astoria, Oregon. Good bye I-5!!
If you follow rivers you invariably follow the railroads. Here, as we cruise into Kelso to find our hotel, Angela waves out to the BNSF. The railroad would offer us lullabies throughout the evening. 😬
We've been living on our bikes for a week now and living out of our panniers for almost two weeks including our car travel. We're starting to get inro a rhythm living on the road.
Walking back to our motel, barely visible through the trees along the riverbank of the Cowlitz, we realized that Kelso is a dodgy place compared to Longview across the river where we had dinner. This according to our bartender tonight. Luckily we got back before darkness when the boogyman and crack addicts come out. Now to double bolt the door and get some sleep before our big turn towards the Pacific tomorrow.
