Day 12. Play Day to Seaside, OR

Only a 26 mile ride today. We knew we wanted to have an easy, enjoyable, almost a down day today and we did.  We slept in a bit, had a late breakfast at the Astoria Coffee House and finally left the hotel at 11 arriving in Seaside around 2pm.

Leaving our motel finally around 11, what a relaxing morning. Apologies to the women packing her trunk in an unfortunate position. 😮

Another cool but beautiful morning as we head south of Astoria along the Youngs River.

We've been following the Lewis & Clark route along the Columbia River and just south of Astoria is where they wintered before terminating their westward trek in 1805 and heading back east to report the findings of their great expedition.

The Lewis & Clark Discovery Expedition built Fort Clatsop (named after the local Indian tribe that helped them) here for winter shelter and to establish a presence for the US after the Louisiana Purchase.  This is an accurate reconstruction based on their journals.

Angela embraces a bronze of Sacajawea and her child at the National Park.

We've had some trouble, 5x now on the trip, with Angela dropping a chain to the inside of her rear cassette and getting the chain wedged in tight.  It's a bit of an effort to get the chain unjammed and not good for her confidence when climbing the steepest hills.  At least it was a nice view to behold before we left.

Pulling into Seaside on a cool and sunny afternoon.  We were told that it's quite a busy tourist spot in the summer and for spring break. At this point, we had pretty much decided we would stop here for the night.

Feeling better and better about a short and easy day with a stop over at the beach!

It had been 5 hours since our big breakfast back in Astoria so we found the Crabby Oyster in the heart of this tourist town and chowed down on really good clam chowder and a local Blond beer from a brew pub in Cannon Beach just 5 miles down the road.

Les, operating the Prom Bike Shoppe for over 40 years attended to Angela's rear derailleur issue and took care of a squeak in my bottom bracket, all for $20.

Checking in to the City Center Motel we met Rick Anderson. Rick, 61 years old,  jumped on the Pacific Crest Trail in the desert east of San Diego in April and finished hiking to its northern terminus in Washington state at the Canadian Border this month, 2,700 miles!  Now he's hiking back south on the Oregon Trail.  He said he only hiked 17 miles today which made us feel embarrassed for only riding 26 miles!!  Very nice guy and quite an inspiration. Imagine the stories he could have told us.

Now we settle into our room, do some laundry and explore Seaside a little more before going to bed. Tomorrow we're heading for Tilamook, OR and a cheese tour!!
