Snapshots from the Road: May 10-11

Bonneville Flats in the background, just north of I-80.

Venturing off of the Interstate System we opted to cross Nevada on the “The Loneliest Road in America” so named by Life Magazine in 1986.

It was an extra couple of hours and a few miles longer than I-80 across the state but US 50 was a good highway with very little traffic.  As we drove west we crossed one beautiful and expansive valley after another, each valley separated by snow capped mountains.

The state of Nevada took the 1986 pejorative Life article and turned it into a marketing scheme that invites you to stop at the handful of little towns located off of US 50 and get a stamp. Send in your official “Survival” passbook with 5 stamps and your get an official state certificate that you survived the Loneliest Road in America.

Overnight in Reno, The Biggest Little City in the World.

After we checked in to our motel in Ft. Bragg we did a little test ride with all of our gear strapped on for the first time in 18 months.  And no, I didn’t have to register at the Ft. Bragg Police Department!!!  It was just a convenient place for a photo. After some minor adjustments we are assured we’re good enough to go. Tomorrow we ride!!
