Day 32. Pt. Mugu to Redondo Beach

A 54 mile day in the SoCal sun.

We slept well last night to the sounds of the nearby waves and took an early morning walk up to the west side of the beach near the point.

From the point we're the first on the beach to see the sunrise over the mountains between us and the crazy LA County that were about to enter to the east. .

We had mocha coffee and apples with the last of our peanut butter and Nutella for breakfast.

All packed up and ready to head out at 9:15 and the wind began to favor us during the night. Yea!

Riding down PC 1 first thing was pretty pleasant with a decently sized shoulder and modest traffic with a sparkling sea on our right.

And here we are entering LA County, the largest county in the US with over 460 square miles. A land where the highways rule, cars are the coin of the realm and cyclist are mere pennies along the side of the road.  4,000,000 people in the county and 7,800,000 regestered vehicles. Go figure.

Into Malibu, 21 miles of scenic beauty and the last 5 miles pure hell for a cyclist. We weren't very impressed with Malibu from what we saw along the coastal highway this morning.

The traffic volume picked up and the shoulders were now filled with cars, waste bins and construction cones and vehicles.  This photo is actually a pretty good spot. It got much worse.

We slipped down one of the public beach accesses to see the houses on stilts clinging to the Malibu shoreline to get an idea of what the rich and famous saw everyday.

That's Santa Monica pier in the background and we're now on wonderful bike pathways along the beach all the way to Redondo Beach, about 15 miles ahead.

We stopped in Venice Beach for frozen yogurt and to watch all the crazy people along the boardwalk. Quite a spectacle and it was a little after noon on a Wednesday!!

You can barely see Angela up ahead on this broad and sweeping part of the beach and bike path.  The beaches around Manhattan and Hermosa seemed almost a half mile across at times. And today they were mostly empty.

A nice end to the day with dinner down by the harbor.  Tomorrow we will cross Los Angela County by bike.
