Well today was a big day, almost 12 hours and 65 mi start to finish, ~8hrs of it riding the bike. High 40’s at 6:30 and never above 60 with sprinkles as we finished in Tahoe.
We also had 6,000’ of climbing with 3 different summits. It was nice to have some flats and downhill runs instead of constant climbing like yesterday.
We spent the hardest first 50mi on hwy 88. It was scenic and the traffic went from light to moderate as we saw more and more campers, boats, and trailers being hauled up early for the Memorial Day weekend.
Brian and his crew were removing winter deadfall trees. We chatted quite a bit before he tucked us in behind a dozen cars being led up the one open lane.
Our first big summit before we drop down to about 7,200’ at the dam for Silver Lake, and no the concession wasn’t open yet.
While I was waiting at the dam for Len, Echo, the man closest, broke from his fishing to chat and offered me two of his waters as I was getting low. Even though the fish weren’t biting he went on about how much he just loved being outside and especially this lake. I share his love of the great outdoors but less so for the fishing.
6 to 7% grade climbing back up to Carson Pass.
Anticlimactic signing but we finally overcame the Sierras!!
After a thrilling coast back down to 7,000’ we had one more pass before we could find a home for the night in South Lake Tahoe.
Pretend I didn’t wait to long to take the photo of welcome sign as we rode into town.
And that’s Lake Tahoe on a blustery evening as we head the final 2 miles to our hotel. We should sleep well tonight!!
Well done! Eating and sleeping are two things that go great with bike touring. I hope you accomplish both before heading across Nevada.
