Up at 4:15 (4 hr time change) and we’re having breakfast at 5. Could be a long day, but the breakfast was good.
Sunrise behind Diamond Head from our balcony at the Park Shore hotel in Waikiki. Things are looking better after heavy rains and wind last night broke all 3 elevators at 4am. I had thought it would be nice to stay on the top floor, 18, when I made the reservation. Thus we had to hike down 18 floors for breakfast. Luckily one of the elevators was working after breakfast so we could save some of our energy for the day.
Picked up at 7am from our hotel we headed on a tour of Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Monument. It’s amazing that this is built over the remnants of the Arizona which you can see above and below the water.
Over 900 seaman were entombed in the Arizona after the munitions bunker was struck by the Japanese which led to a violent explosion that tore the battleship in half. Out of a total crew 1512 sailors and Marines onboard only 335 survived.
Back at the Park Shore by noon we rested up by the pool and shared a lunch of Hawaiian shaved ice, yogurt, pineapples and mango. Yum.
An afternoon walk along Waikiki Beach.
There’s a huge park and zoo adjacent to the high rises of Waikiki that we enjoyed walking through.
After a couple of Lulu’s Mai Tai’s and some sushi we were ready to bring our first day in Hawaii to an end, an excellent and enjoyable day.
