Kansas!! Day 4: Newton to Sterling

At 7:30 I said good bye to Prashant, Shruti, Janet and Orvin and headed west towards Sterling 62 miles away, arriving before 2 o’clock.  Because of the threat of rain throughout the day Prashant and Shruti shortened their plan to 40 miles into Hutchinson, hoping to see the space museum there. It houses the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow and a US space artifacts collection second only to the Smithsonian. Who knew? The couple from India did.

30 miles down the road I came across one of the few towns along my ride today called Buhler where the only place serving breakfast was the retirement home restaurant called Sunny’s. Biscuits and gravy and two eggs over easy would get me to Sterling.  The staff and old folks (mostly older than me) were very kind and friendly and gave me a little glimpse of what may lie ahead.

I’d been riding fairly hard so far today to try to  arrive before the afternoon storms but I needed to slow down now to let the storm up ahead passing over Sterling to continue north.  I was ready to take it easier anyway!  The temperature dropped about 12 degrees to 70, the wind picked up and I got a few sprinkles on me but by the time I got to Sterling the sun was coming out and the water was drying up.

By 1:45 I was treating myself to a Banana Split at the TNT Dairyland that was waiting for me fortuitously next door to my motel in Sterling. I would have liked to ride further but the next town with a population of more than 100 is Larned, 54 miles away. That may be tomorrow’s destination.

  1. I missed this update yesterday. We visited the space museum years ago when visiting the McCoys.
