Day 1-Coral Springs to Kendall

After our first 6 miles through the Coral Springs suburbs we arrive along the canal trail that follows the Everglades south as the sun comes up.  The gravel canal trail will take us south to I-75 and Miami-Dade County. It’s about 75 degrees but it will get into the high 80’s this afternoon.

We had about a mile of trail that apparently is down range from a gun range, and there were lots of people popping off large caliber weapons.  We tried to stay low and move fast.

Our first break of the day after cycling the first 3 hours.  Chocolate milk is our friend.

Google Maps recommended we go this way. We actually tried but it got way worse and then just ended at some scary No Trespassing signs so we had to retrace a couple of miles.

And we had some soul sucking headwinds all day, and FL 997, while not a horrible highway to ride on, had nothing in the way to block our head wind so we grinded on at about 10mph.

Google Maps said this was 137th NW, also called Power Rd.  There was about 100 people on 4 wheelers playing like it was “Mad Max Does Florida”.

They even had private cops at the entrances and one of them escorted us through the melee which was very nice.

Having left at 6:45am this morning we were quite happy, after all we had been through today, to check in 65 miles later at the Hampton Inn in Kendall around 3:15pm.  We chilled down our bodies in the room, showered, rinsed our clothes out and walked a mile to Mama Mia’s for Stromboli and a Meatball Sub then waddled back to our hotel for a good nights sleep.
